Dr. Maria Bellringer
Dr Maria Bellringer is a Senior Research Fellow and Associate Director of the Gambling and Addictions Research Centre at Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. Dr Bellringer has almost 25 years’ experience in research, project and staff management. Although her background is in toxicology with a PhD in biochemistry, the past 11 years have been in the gambling arena. Dr Bellringer has written several successful grant applications, has been principal or named investigator on numerous gambling research projects, on varied topics, within New Zealand, and has been a named investigator or collaborator on several international projects. She is the key organiser of the International Think Tank on Gambling Research, Policy and Practice which has met annually since 2004 and, with collaborators from two other organisations, of the International Gambling Conference held biennially in Auckland. Dr Bellringer acts as a reviewer for several academic journals and research organisations and regularly presents research papers at conferences. Dr Bellringer also recently held an 18-month appointment as Chief Executive of the national New Zealand Gambling Helpline; a distance counselling, advice and referral service for problem gamblers and those affected by someone else’s gambling.
